States Settle With Household Finance

SEATTLE -Thousands of Washington homeowners who were overcharged for home loans issued by Household International will share millions of dollars in one of the largest direct consumer restitution cases in U.S. history, Attorney General Christine Gregoire announced today.

State Settles Vacuum Cleaner Case

SPOKANE - Three members of a door-to-door vacuum sales ring that allegedly used high-pressure sales tactics on elderly consumers will be required to pay $30,000 in consumer restitution and $20,000 in attorney fees, Attorney General Christine Gregoire announced today.

State Sues Porn-Promoting Spammer

SEATTLE - Attorney General Christine Gregoire today accused a Houston, Texas man of violating the state's anti-spam law by deceiving Washington residents into opening e-mail that contained sales pitches for prescription medications and pornographic web sites.

In a civil lawsuit filed in King County Superior Court, Gregoire's High-Tech Unit accused Ernesto Haberli -- also known as Eduardo Warren -- of sending e-mails with deceptive subject lines and attempting to conceal his identity through the use of a phony name in the e-mail's "from" field.

State Supreme Court Denies Motion to Delay Sagastegui Execution

OLYMPIA -October 1, 1998 -The Washington Supreme Court today denied a motion to delay the scheduled Oct. 13 execution of triple murderer Jeremy Vargas Sagastegui.

A petition filed by Sagastegui's mother, Katie Vargas, asked the Supreme Court to delay the execution and to allow her to participate in the case on behalf of her son. The petition claimed that Sagastegui was not mentally competent to make his own decisions concerning legal issues in the case.

After considering Ms. Vargas' petition today, the Court issued an order denying her motions.

Attorney General's Office Appointed to Answer Petition in Sagastegui Case

OLYMPIA - September 24, 1998 - The Washington Attorney General's Office will answer a petition filed Sept. 23 in the state Supreme Court that seeks to delay the scheduled Oct. 13 execution of Jeremy Vargas Sagastegui.

The petition, filed by Sagastegui's mother, Katie Vargas, asks the Supreme Court to stay the execution and appoint her to represent the condemned killer. The petition claims that Sagastegui is not mentally competent to make decisions concerning legal issues in his case.
