The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of all Simplicity cribs with tubular metal mattress-support frames. This includes both drop-side and fixed-side cribs. One child suffocated when his crib collapsed.
LaJobi, Inc. this week recalled 217,000 Graco-branded drop-side cribs after reports of 99 incidents, including one that led to a child’s concussion.
Check the Consumer Product Safety Commission site to see if your crib has been recalled. If so, don’t try to fix it. You need to find a safe sleeping environment for your baby. Follow the recall instructions carefully.
If your crib hasn’t been recalled, check the crib for missing, broken or loose parts or hardware. Make sure to tighten the hardware from time to time.
Since 2007, the CPSC has recalled more than seven million drop-side cribs due to the risk of drop-side detachment. When the drop-side of a crib detaches, it can create a dangerous gap that babies can slip into and suffocate. The problems are so serious that some crib manufacturers reportedly proposed a ban on drop-side cribs and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office is suggesting that parents not purchase drop-side cribs.
