A consumer contacted our office to question the legitimacy of the American Community Survey mailed to him by the U.S. Census Bureau. He was concerned that the survey advised him he was compelled by law to fill it out. It asks for personal information, so he thought it might be an identity theft scam.
It’s smart to be skeptical of such mailers. But this particular survey is legit and is sent to a small percentage of the population. The information you provide is confidential and used for statistical purposes, filling in gaps between each 10-year census.
For more information, check out the survey Web site or contact the American Community Survey Office by e-mail or phone, 1-888-456-7215.
