McKenna Announces New York Man Second to Settle in State's First Spyware Case


Defendant’s name allegedly used as an alias in business transactions

SEATTLE – Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna today announced a settlement with a New York man who allegedly allowed his name to be used as an alias in business dealings by Secure Computer, a company accused of violating Washington’s computer spyware law.

MEDIA ADVISORY: Cancer Lifeline Presented with More Than $24,000

Attorney General Rob McKenna will present Cancer Lifeline with a check for $24,182 to benefit cancer patients. The grant is a portion of a multi-state settlement with drug maker Bristol-Myers Squibb, which developed and marketed late-stage cancer drug Taxol.

Cancer Lifeline operates a statewide 24-hour-a-day phone service offering support and resources to patients and their families. The nonprofit provides the toll free line to increase support opportunities for rural residents.

McKenna Announces Supreme Court Decision in Sexually Violent Predator Case

SEATTLE – Attorney General Rob McKenna supported an important Washington State Supreme Court decision upholding an order to commit a convicted sex predator whose victims included children and a developmentally delayed woman.

The decision concerns the commitment of Raymond Marshall. Marshall, 34, has a six-year history of convictions for abusing four victims and has admitted to additional victims. He is confined to a state-operated institution on McNeil Island for sexual predators who have completed their prison sentences.

Health Organizations to Benefit from Settlement with Grill Maker

SEATTLE -- Eight organizations that promote health and nutrition will receive $165,315 as a result of an antitrust settlement with the manufacturer of the George Foreman Grill.

The state today filed the proposed cash distribution plan in U.S. District Court in New York following a September 2002 settlement between the grill manufacturer, Salton, Inc., and 44 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. The states alleged that Salton tried to keep retailers from selling the grill at a reduced price.

The Attorney General’s Office in Spokane has received at least five calls this week from Eastern Washington residents regarding lottery scams.

Loews to Divest Seattle Cineplex as Condition of Merger with AMC

SEATTLE – Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna today announced a consent decree requiring the divestiture of the Loews Meridian 16 movie theater in downtown Seattle after the merger of the Loews and AMC theater chains is completed.

“The divestiture of the Meridian 16 theater will help ensure that the market for first-run commercial movies remains competitive within the central part of Seattle,” Attorney General Rob McKenna said. “AMC and Loews are the dominant first-run exhibitors in this part of the city.”

Attorney General’s Office charges Lakewood mortgage loan officer with theft

TACOMA—The Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Unit Wednesday charged a Lakewood loan officer with stealing $900 in fees from his clients.

Terry W. Goble of Lakewood was charged with one count of second-degree theft and two counts of third-degree theft. The second-degree theft charge carries a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Each third-degree theft charge carries a maximum penalty of 1 year in prison and a $5,000 fine. The charges were brought at the request of the Washington State Department of Financial Institutions.

“Charitable organizations need our support,” McKenna said. “Unfortunately, the holidays present opportunities for crooks to prey on your generosity. Do your research and give to those organizations you know and trust.

McKenna Announces Settlements with LA Weight Loss Program

OLYMPIA – Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna today announced settlements with operators of LA Weight Loss diet centers in Washington. The settlements resolve allegations that LA Weight Loss misrepresented program costs to get consumers to enroll, then pushed the sale of protein bars and supplements after they had signed a contract.

The state reached agreements with three businesses: LA Weight Loss Centers, Inc., and LA Weight Loss Franchise Company, both of Horsham, Penn., and NWM Inc., of Lake Oswego, Ore. Combined, they operate 19 diet centers in Washington.
