Attorney General

Bob Ferguson

With spring and summer vacation season upon us, Attorney General Rob McKenna has a few tips for travelers to help keep them safe from identity theft while away from home.

Actuality 1: Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, you need to protect your identity just as you would your valuables. Thieves are just as likely to target your personal information as your expensive camera or laptop. (12 seconds)

Actuality 2: Pack only what you need. Inform your credit card company that you’re traveling. Delete sensitive information from your laptop and cell phone. During your trip, wear a money belt and use the hotel safe to store valuables and copies of important documents. (16 seconds)

Actuality 3:  Smart travelers have several ways to pay. A credit card gives you better fraud protection than a debit card and most companies now extend zero liability to customers for unauthorized charges. Remember to continue to monitor your accounts for unauthorized purchases or withdrawals after you return home.   (16 seconds)
