Office of the Attorney General

Attorney General

Bob Ferguson

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

SEATTLE – Simon ffitch, chief of Public Counsel Section within the Washington State Attorney General’s Office, today issued a statement concerning Puget Sound Energy’s announcement of a merger with a consortium of North American investors. The merger requires approval by the state Utilities and Transportation Commission.

“This merger could have significant implications for Puget Sound Energy customers,” ffitch said. “Washington law requires that PSE and its merger partners show that the merger is in the public interest and does not harm consumers. Public Counsel will be looking at how this major change in ownership could impact rates, service quality and infrastructure reliability.”

The Public Counsel Section advocates for the interests of consumers on major rate cases, mergers and other rulemakings before the Utilities and Transportation Commission. Public Counsel also advocates for consumers in court appeals, through technical study groups and before the Legislature and other policy makers. The office maintains contact with the public through a citizen advisory committee, community organizations, public hearings and personal contact with consumers in major cases. More information about Public Counsel’s work is available online at /utilities-regulated.
