Other LanguagesOLYMPIA — Every year in the United States, millions of vulnerable adults—seniors and those with disabilities—are physically and sexually assaulted, neglected, and financially exploited. In Washington state, government agencies receive tens of thousands of reports of abuse and exploitation every year.
This week, two Legislative committees will hear bipartisan bills to provide new protections for vulnerable adults. Both bills are requested by state Attorney General Rob McKenna, based on the recommendations of participants in his 2007 Vulnerable Adults Summit.
Senate Bill 6202 will be heard by the Senate Human Services Committee on Friday, Jan. 22 at 8:00 a.m. The hearing will take place in Senate Hearing Room 1 of the J.A. Cherberg Building in Olympia.
SB 6202 is sponsored by Sen. James Hargrove, D-Hoquiam, and co-sponsored by Sen. Janéa Holmquist, R-Moses Lake, among others.
The companion bill, HB 2426 will be heard by the House Public Safety Committee on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. The hearing will take place in House Hearing Room E of the John L. O'Brien Building in Olympia.
HB 2426 is sponsored by Rep. Jim Moeller, D-Vancouver, Rep. Barbara Bailey, R-Oak Harbor, and others.
