Other LanguagesSEATTLE – Attorney General Rob McKenna today announced the hiring of a new computer forensics investigator to help fight high-tech fraud schemes including identity theft.
Aaron Munn will join the Consumer Protection Division in Seattle starting Sept. 26. Munn has worked for the Attorney General’s Office as an information technology specialist for the past five years.
“Internet scams such as ‘phishing’ and spyware are a growing threat to consumers,” Attorney General Rob McKenna said. “Cons are increasingly using bogus e-mails and Web sites to pilfer personal information from unsuspecting consumers that can later be used to loot bank accounts or commit other forms of identity theft. Internet-related complaints accounted for more than half of all fraud reported to the Federal Trade Commission last year, with losses of more than $265 million.
“Aaron Munn brings a high level of commitment to his work and has a passion for serving the public and protecting consumers from those who would do harm,” McKenna continued. “His background in network security and computer systems management, combined with his understanding of the criminal justice system, will be extremely helpful in our efforts to investigate and prosecute high-tech fraud cases.”
Munn is one of three new employees to join the Consumer Protection Division. Two new attorneys were recently hired to pursue high-tech fraud, identity theft and other scams targeting consumers. Funding for their positions was included in $1.6 million in additional support for the Consumer Protection Division approved by the Legislature. McKenna sought the additional funds to address the dramatic rise in these kinds of fraud.
Munn joined the Attorney General’s Office in September 2000. He previously held positions with several high-tech companies including Avenue A, CompUSA and MicroAGE.
Munn’s career also includes 14 years of military experience. He was promoted to the rank of U.S. Army captain in 2001 and is currently a company commander for the 96th Troop Command in Tacoma.
