SEATTLE — Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced today he has selected Darwin Roberts, a federal prosecutor for the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), to serve as a Deputy Attorney General. Roberts will be one of five deputies who oversee a number of Attorney General’s Office (AGO) legal divisions and provide strategic leadership. Ferguson also announced the selection of Mark Melroy, Senior Legislative Analyst and former Budget Manager for the King County Council, as the Chief Financial Officer.
“Darwin brings extensive criminal justice experience to the Attorney General’s Office, including fraud and money laundering,” said Ferguson. “His experience and dedication to public service make him a great addition to the team.”
A University of Chicago Law School graduate, Roberts worked in private practice for a number of years before joining the DOJ in 2005. At the DOJ he worked on both the criminal and civil side and was the lead federal prosecutor in the high-profile ‘Barefoot Bandit’ case.
“I’m privileged and very excited to join the Attorney General’s Office,” said Roberts. “I look forward to working with Attorney General Ferguson and all the talented attorneys and staff in the office to protect and defend the people of Washington state.”
At the King County Council, Melroy managed the adoption of the county's $5 billion budget. Melroy led the council’s financial and budget deliberations while the county faced a $145 million (24 percent) reduction to its general fund budget. Melroy helped preserve vital functions of the county's criminal justice system while maintaining the general obligation bond ratings at the highest possible level, AAA in most cases.
Melroy is a registered professional engineer, and holds a graduate degree from the University of Washington Evans School of Public Affairs.
“Mark brings a wealth of budgeting and financial expertise, as well as excellent strategic planning skills,” said Ferguson. “He will be a huge asset for our office.”

Roberts starts at the AGO Sept. 9 and will be based in Seattle. Melroy begins Sept. 23 and will be based primarily out of Olympia.
