FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

OLYMPIA -- Attorney General Christine Gregoire has issued this statement in response to today's 7-2 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in the Locke v. Davey case.

"We are pleased that a solid majority of the Supreme Court has decided to protect the right of states to determine if taxpayer money will be used to fund religious instruction. The framers of Washington's constitution believed that religious freedom was best protected by ensuring that public money would not be used to support religious activity with which others may disagree. As supported by this decision, nothing in Washington constitution discriminates against any individual based on his or her religious beliefs."
