Olympia -March 21, 2000- Obviously I am discouraged by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision today. It is very significant that both the majority and the dissenting opinions bluntly acknowledge how deadly and what a devastating social problem tobacco is.
While the court ruled against FDA regulating tobacco, I think the opinion also sends a clear message that it is shameful this product is not regulated and it is a call for action by Congress to regulate the leading preventable cause of death in America.
Tobacco is one of the most, if not the most unregulated products in America. It is time for Congress to give the FDA full authority to regulate tobacco.
