A new milestone has been reached in the long journey to a cleanup of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, where the federal government has renewed its commitment to remediating contaminated groundwater and cleaning hundreds of water tanks.
Attorney General McKenna was present and took part in the negotiations. The Seattle Times reports:
"The people of the Tri-Cities are justly proud of their heritage of serving their country during difficult times,
and they deserve to know that the federal government is committed to specific time lines for addressing one of our nations most serious environmental challenges," he said.
Governor Christine Gregoire added,
"It will be an enforceable document in a courtroom. It is aggressive, it is achievable and it's enforceable. Those were our objectives."
Details of the agreement are available in the following release.
