Attorney General McKenna to lead public forums on gas prices

OLYMPIA – Attorney General Rob McKenna and economist Keith Leffler will discuss results from the first phase of the state’s ongoing investigation into gas prices and gather public comments during three evening public forums this winter.

Members of the public are invited to learn about factors influencing gas prices in Washington state and their communities. They will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide information they believe may be relevant to the state’s investigation.

The tour, called “Gas Gauge,” includes stops in the following cities:

  • Bellingham: Wednesday, Jan. 9
    Whatcom County Council Chambers
    Whatcom County Courthouse
    311 Grand Ave.
    7 – 8:30 p.m.
    Seating capacity: 220
  • Spokane: Thursday, Jan. 17
    Spokane Community College
    1810 N. Greene St.
Lair Student Center - Sasquatch/Bigfoot Rooms
    6 - 7:30 p.m.
  • Bellevue: Tuesday, Feb. 5
    Location TBD

In August, the Attorney General’s Office released a report detailing findings from the first phase of the gas prices investigation. The report shows how Washington compares with other states, how cities and counties compare with one another, where our gas supply comes from and what goes into the price of a gallon of gas.

The Attorney General’s Office is overseeing the investigation with assistance from the state Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development. To assist with the research, state agencies retained Dr. Leffler, an economist at the University of Washington with expertise on the state’s petroleum industry.

The final report is expected to be released sometime in February and will include additional analysis related to differences in the wholesale cost of gasoline from various supply sources, transportation costs, retailing costs and diesel prices. Anomalies in the data will also be addressed.
