Attorney General Bob Ferguson comes from a family of veterans and believes that we should stand up for those who have served our nation.

The Attorney General’s Office is proud to support our military, veterans and their families. These proud Americans have done their part to honor and serve our country—and it’s only right to honor and serve them.

Consumer Protection
The Attorney General’s Office primarily serves our military personnel through its consumer protection division. We help active duty military and veterans by teaching them how to recognize and recover from scams and educating them on their rights in several important areas, including:

  • Buying and leasing cars
  • Auto repairs: The Attorney General’s Office took action against an auto repair company that was dismantling transmissions in vehicles owned by soldiers then charging them to reassemble. We were alerted to the practice by the Armed Forces Military Control Board.
  • Lemon Law: Active duty military assigned to duty or living in Washington receive protection under Washington’s Lemon Law no matter where the vehicle was purchased.
  • Credit, collections and repossessions
  • Canceling contracts

Foreclosure
The Attorney General’s Office also provides mortgage and foreclosure assistance and holds banks accountable for harm to their customers.

The Service Members Civil Relief Act (SCRA) provides protections for active service members, including postponing or suspending certain civil obligations, such as mortgage payments and foreclosure.

The Attorney General’s Office was a leader in the 2012 National Mortgage Settlement, that provides enhanced safeguards for military personnel beyond SCRA protections, including:

  • Extending the window of protections for qualified service members; and
  • Not requiring service members to be delinquent to qualify for a short sale, loan modification, or other loss mitigation relief if the service member suffers financial hardship and is otherwise eligible for such loss mitigation.
