Don’t get burned by summer scams

Don’t get burned by summer scams

(Scams) Permanent link

It’s summer, and the sun is finally out! Unfortunately, so are summer scammers, looking to make quick money by cheating you. To help you stop them, the New York Attorney General’s Office has published a brochure about how to identify and avoid summer scams. And even though the information comes from across the country, scammers operate the same way in Washington, and it’s a good idea to be aware of the dangers out there this summer.

The brochure covers many common home improvement scams:

  • Driveway paving
  • House painting
  • Roof repair
  • Chimney and basement inspections

And, vacation scams:

  • Rental houses/condos
  • Discount certificates
  • Timeshares and vacation clubs

If you encounter any of these scams, or would like to know if there is a danger of a business being a scam, contact the Better Business Bureau and the Washington state Attorney General’s Office.

Thank you for timely information!

The brochure was helpful and I will pass it on to my folks. The vacation info: a bit surprising that people will pay for a certificate up front.
Question about insurance for a home improvement contractor: what type of insurance should they have, and how would I check?
Thanks again. [ALL CONSUMING BLOG MODERATOR RESPONSE: Check with L&I to see if a contractor has met all the requirements to do business in Washington:]
